MEMBERS of the Southern Cross Solidarity Brigade
from Australia and New Zealand expressed their
determination to keep up the struggle to free the
Cuban Five, the five anti-terrorist fighters locked
up in the United States since 1998.
Antonio Guerrero, Gerardo Hernández, Ramón
Labañino, René González and Fernando González are
serving heavy prison sentences for providing
information on the plans of Florida-based anti-Cuban
groups to engage in violent actions against Cuba.
According to a press release from the Cuban
Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, the
brigade members also said they would spread the
truth about the Cuban Revolution’s achievements in
important areas such as health and education, and
they highlighted the transparency of Cuba’s
political system and socialist democracy.
During their visit to the island, the brigade
members were housed at the Julio Antonio Mella
International Camp in the Havana municipality of
Caimito, west of the capital.
As part of their program of activities, they did
voluntary work in agriculture and visited sites of
historical and social interest.
They also heard presentations on aspects of Cuban
realities and conversed with leaders of the
Federation of Cuban Women, the Union of Young
Communists and the Federation of University Students.
