Mexican leader calls for liberation of Cuban anti-terrorists

By Yuith Díaz Gazán

MEXICO, Jan 16 (PL).—The fight for the release of the five Cuban anti-terrorists incarcerated in the United States must be strengthened and waged in a global social context, affirmed Juan Carlos Gutiérrez, a leader of the Mexican Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD).

Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Rene González, Ramón Labañino and Fernando González, in prison in the United States since September 12, 1998, are an international example of integrity in maintaining their principles unscathed, he told Prensa Latina.

In an exclusive interview, the PRD secretary for youth affairs stated that keeping up the battle for the release of the Five, as they are known in international defense campaigns, will deepen the fraternal ties between Cuba and Mexico.

"It is a way of engaging in peaceful civil resistance, because they were in the United States not to engage in terrorism, but to safeguard human lives," he added.

They are part of a strategy to halt events related to the potential elimination of thousands of human beings and the decimation of the Cuban population, he noted.

Gutiérrez recalled that during a visit to Cuba in April 2007 as part of the PRD delegation participating in the Solidarity Campaign for the release of Five, he expressed his commitment to that common cause.

Gerardo, Antonio, René, Ramón and Fernando were sentenced for preventing acts of terrorism against the island organized in Miami, Florida by anti-Cuban groups and are serving sentences ranging from 15 years to double life terms in prison.

"This is a case that goes beyond demanding their freedom: it has to do with other styles of resistance, of confronting the violence exercised by the United States without using arms and with a new vanguard concept," he affirmed.

The young PRD politician said that the procedure utilized to silence the Cuban fighters is yet another attempt by the United States to undermine democratic movements and everything linked to the socialist ideal.

"For that reason," Gutiérrez said, "we have to direct our actions to breaking the silence of the media and achieving the liberation of the Five.
