Mensaje Urgente

Denuncia la Asamblea Nacional confinamiento e incomunicación a que han sido sometidos los Cinco Patriotas cubanos

A partir del 28 de febrero Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González y René González están otra vez en "el hueco", en confinamiento solitario, encerrados todo el tiempo sin contacto alguno con el resto de los prisioneros o con el mundo exterior.

Se les prohíbe recibir cualquier tipo de visitas incluyendo la de sus abogados y la de los cónsules cubanos. Se les prohíbe usar el teléfono, incluso para comunicarse por esa vía con sus abogados y familiares.

Al impedir todo contacto entre los Cinco y sus abogados defensores, el Gobierno de Estados Unidos está violando principios y normas elementales de derecho.

Las autoridades conocían que los abogados realizaban consultas con sus defendidos y habían hecho los trámites necesarios para visitarlos esta semana a fin de revisar con ellos la documentación que la defensa debe presentar a la Corte de Atlanta a más tardar el 7 de abril. Esta medida ha sido adoptada por el Gobierno de Washington con el deliberado propósito de impedir un proceso de apelación justo.

En esta etapa crucial cuando los abogados defensores concentran la atención en la elaboración de los alegatos para la Corte de Apelaciones, no solo se les obstaculiza gravemente la posibilidad de hacerlo, sino que se les ha obligado a emplear gran parte de su tiempo en esta semana en numerosas y hasta ahora infructuosas gestiones para tratar de comunicarse con sus clientes.

Denunciamos esta situación y exigimos que inmediatamente se permita a los Cinco Patriotas cubanos restablecer la comunicación con sus abogados y reunirse con ellos.

Urgent statement by the cuban Parliament

As of February 28th, Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and René González have once more been placed in solitary confinement, locked up all day and denied contact with other prisoners and the outside world.

They have been forbidden to receive any visits —including those of their attorneys and Cuban consular officials— and their telephone privileges withdrawn, completely depriving them of communication with not only their attorneys but their families as well.

By blocking access between the Five and their defense attorneys, the Government of the United States is violating the basic principles and norms of law.

The authorities knew that the attorneys were meeting with their clients and had made the necessary arrangements to meet with them in the coming week to review the documents for their defense to be presented before the Eleventh Circuit Court in Atlanta no later than April 7th. This action was adopted by Washington with the deliberate intention of impeding a fair appeals process.

In this crucial stage when the attorneys need to focus their attention on the appeal briefs, not only are they seriously obstructed from doing so, but they are obliged to waste time in unsuccessful attempts to communicate with their clients.

We condemn this new development and demand that our five Cuban compatriots are granted access to their attorneys and given the right to meet with them once again.
