Havana
University for the Five
• DURING the UH por los Cinco
event, students at the University of Havana (UH) met
this September 12 to demand the liberation of
Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labańino, Antonio Guerrero
and Fernando González, still imprisoned in the
United States.
For
this date, the 15th anniversary of the Five’s arrest,
the University Students Federation (FEU) programmed
a series of activities which included placing a
yellow ribbon on the Alma Mater, the University
symbol; producing a giant placard of the Five with
signatures of solidarity from the university
community; a vigil in the Juan Antonio Mella Plaza
with students from all faculties bearing 15 flags;
and placing messages on the issue of the Five on the
"Desde la UH" Facebook page.
In reference to the unjust and
prolonged incarceration of the Cuban heroes, FEU
President Laritza Limia Fernández stated to
Granma International:
"Today, we have come together to
confirm the position of university students in
relation to the case of the five Cuban heroes
unjustly imprisoned in the United States, to convey
the message that the campaign around the Five must
transcend national borders and reach the heart of
the U.S. people, which is where this fight is really
going to be won; to multiply this campaign in
relation to all young people in our country and in
the world, in order not just to see the legal
aspects, but the human side of the case, which has
damaged so many families and so many Cubans
identified with these men, who have tried to defend
the security and integrity of our people.
"I believe that President Obama
should listen to us, should for once and for all
respond sensitively to the messages of love and
solidarity sent not just from Cuba, but from all
parts of the world. We hope that this campaign will
grow stronger and multiply in all countries."
The inauguration of the event was
attended by Dr. Gustavo Cobreiro, University of
Havana rector; and students and workers at this
higher education institution. •

Fernando González Llort
celebrated his 50th birthday, August 18th. He was
only 35 years of age on Saturday, September 12,
1998, when, during the dawn hours, the FBI arrested
him, but they have not been able to destroy his
principles
René no longer a
U.S. citizen
SINCE Thursday, May 9 at 2:00pm,
René González Sehwerert is "just a Cuban patriot."
At that time, in Havana’s U.S. Interests Section
(USIS), he received the document certifying his
renunciation of U.S. citizenship, a procedure which
will allow him to remain in Cuba. |
