Silvio calls for freedom for the Five
a few blocks
from the White House
WASHINGTON.—Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez
captured his audience in this capital in a concert
last weekend in the DAR Constitution Hall, a few
blocks from the White House, Notimex reports.
At
one moment in the concert, aware of where he was,
Silvio declared: “We are a few blocks from the White
House; with all due respect, Mr. Obama, free our
heroes,” in this way referring to Gerardo, Antonio,
Ramón, Fernando and René, the five Cuban
anti-terrorist activists unjustly incarcerated for
more than 10 years in U.S. prisons.
“Playa Girón,” “Ojalá,” “Mariposas,” “Corazón
desangrado” and “Unicornio” were some of the songs
interpreted by one of the founders of the New Trova
Movement, who also included songs from his most
recent CD, Segunda cita), such as “Carta a
Violeta Parra.”
Before singing “Cita con ángeles,” the artist told a
story about a picture which he saw as a boy in which
angels guided children through chaos, “although they
were not always able to bring them through.”
The
audience, which applauded constantly, shouting out
requests, sang with Rodríguez at the top of their
lungs the words of his songs, including the last
one, which says, ”We have better vibes and are much
less selfish.”
