PRAGUE,
Nov. 27.— The 2nd Congress of the European
Left unanimously approved a resolution of solidarity
with the five Cuban men unjustly convicted and
sentenced to long terms in U.S. prisons for
combating terrorism.
The resolution notes that for more than nine
years, the Five, as they are known around the world,
remain incarcerated as the result of a politicized
and unjust trial in the city of Miami, Florida, and
that their case has received support from all over
the world, including that of 6,000 intellectuals
including Nobel laureates.
European leftists meeting in this 2nd Congress in
Prague on November 24-25 joined their voices with
others in the world demanding an immediate halt to
this injustice.
The organization decided to appeal to its
counterparts and legislators in North America to
call attention to the case, and to promote
statements in European Parliaments on the trial and
prison conditions of the Five.
They also denounced the U.S. denial of visas to
the wives of Gerardo and René, two of the Five, thus
preventing the women from visiting them, and agreed
to participate in a World Day of Solidarity with the
Five on September 12, 2008, which would mark 10
years of their unjust imprisonment. (PL)
