Outstanding performance of Cuban
platform divers in Canada

ONCE again in second place behind the Chinese
pair, in this third meet of the FINA 2013 Diving
Grand Prix, held in Gatineau, Canada, Cuban diving
pair, José Antonio Guerra and Jeinkler Aguirre took
silver with a score of 450.09, their highest this
season.
Olympic champions Yuan Cao and Yanquan Zhang
again took the top spot on the podium, with 470.25
points, which the Cuban pair could not match, with
Colombians Víctor Ortega and Juan Ríos (396.51
points) taking third amongst the seven competing
pairs.
Previously, in Madrid, in the first of the
circuit’s seven meets, the Cuban pair, with 388.80
points, followed Chinese Siyi Xie and Jian Yang
(458.64 points), who subsequently retained their
title in Rostock, Germany (482.43).
Their diving sequence was world class. As an
example, in the London 2012 Olympic Games they came
in fifth with 450.90 points. In this latest meet, in
Canada, they again came close to this total score,
with a 54.00 and 49.80 in the compulsory dives,
recovering later in the four freestyle dives with
scores of over eighty in each (86.40; 90.24; 82.17;
87.48).
With their latest performance, they confirmed
Guerra’s statements after the World Series Moscow
meet: "We feel good, both physically and in terms of
our synchronized program. We have slipped a few
times and been affected by external things, but our
results will improve, as well as our jumps, so that
we can attend the World Championships in Barcelona (July
19 - August 4, 2013) in optimum shape.
