Leinier ranked
number 12 world-wide

With no change in his 2,757 Elo
score, Cuban Leinier Domínguez improved his ranking,
moving up one position to be recognized as the world’s
12th best chess player.
Leinier did not report any
competition this past month, but that did not
prevent him from assuming the highest international
ranking ever obtained by a Cuban player.
The world’s three best also
confirmed their positions without any changes in his
point totals: Norway’s Magnus Carlsen (2,862),
Armenian Levon Aronian (2,813) and Fabiano Caruana
(2,796) from Italy.
The ranking list, updated on the
International Chess Federation’s website, reflected
a change among the top ten at the number four spot,
with Russian Alexander Grischuk (2,785), adding five
points and moving up one position.
His compatriot Vladimir Kramnik
(2,784) maintained his Elo, but fell one place to
number five, followed by Azerbajani Shakhriyar
Mamedyarov (2,775), who made the most spectacular
jump, adding 14 points to his Elo score and moving
up six positions.
World champion Viswanathan Anand
(2,775) from India is now ranked number seven,
Russian Sergey Karjakin (2,772) eighth, Hikaru
Nakamura (2,772) from the United States ninth and,
closing out the top ten, is Bulgaria’s Vesellin
Topalov (2,769).
Among countries, Cuba maintained its
number 18 ranking, with our ten best players
averaging 2,591 points, buoyed by Lázaro Bruzón,
with a score of 2,698. He added seven points in July,
after a busy schedule which included 25 games. (AIN)
