Isla Margarita
Pan American Weightlifting Championships
• Yoelmis, faithful to
his position as two-time world medalist
WITHOUT coming close to lifting the
210 and 205 kilograms which gave him a silver and
bronze medal in Antalya 2010 and Paris 2011, and
faithful to his position as a world elite
weightlifter, Yoelmis Hernández from Pinar del Río,
took three golds in the 85kg division at the Isla
Margarita Pan American Weightlifting Championships.
With
his performance, the 27-year-old secured Cuba second
place at the championships (7 gold, 4 silver, 3
bronze), only exceeded by Colombia (9-13-8), and
confirmed his form for the upcoming Wroclaw World
Championship in Poland this October. He said before
leaving, "I am ready, working speed and coordination
with light weights to contribute to optimizing
technique in the second phase of lifting and
snatching," steps which seemed to draw the best out
of him in Venezuela.
Colombian Juan Ruiz, 348 (154-194),
and U.S. Travis Cooper, 336 (149-187) escorted
Yoelmis to the podium. With this win, he has
qualified for the Central American and Caribbean
Games in Veracruz, 2014. Jorge Luis Barcelán’s squad
still has possibilities for adding points and passes
to the Mexico meet, through Alejandro Cisneros and
Asniel Rodríguez (105 kg) and Alberto Pupo (+ 105).
