Yarisley Silva
wins in Birmingham!
LONDON (PL) .—Cuban pole-vaulter
Yarisley Silva, London 2012 Olympic silver medalist,
has won the Birmingham Grand Prix, the seventh stage
of the World Athletics Diamond League.
Silva,
who holds the best mark of the season with 4.90
meters, achieved a new record of 4.73, ahead of the
current world champion, Brazilian Fabiana Murer,
with 4.63.
In third position is U.S. Jennifer
Sugr, London Olympic champion, who vaulted 4.53
meters.
Latin America and the Caribbean won
another three golds in the Birmingham meet, through
Jamaican Nesta Carter in the 100 meters, Barbadian
Ryan Brathwaite, in the 110m hurdles, and Puerto
Rican Javier Culson (400m hurdles).
Another Caribbean, Dominican Félix
Sánchez came in seventh with 49.68 in his first
performance in this discipline.
Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce,
current Olympic champion in the 100- meter sprint,
came second in the 200 meters, overtaken by Nigerian
Blessing Okagbare, bronze medalist in the London
Olympics long jump.
