Yarisley Silva wins Mall Vault

Lilian Cid

CUBAN Yarisley Silva shone in the “Pole Vault in the Mall” organized in the Jordan Creek Shopping Mall in the U.S. city of Des Moines, Iowa, as part of the Drake Relays.

Silva cleared 4.82 meters, a new record, beating her March Cuba Cup winning height of 4.81m.

This is a new record for Cuba, Central America and the Caribbean, although confirmation depends on the final verdict of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

Yarisley’s competition performance was impeccable, easily exceeding the set heights on her first attempt (4.50, 4.60, 4.70 and 4.82). Her 4.70 meter jump would have sufficed to win her the championship, as she was the only one to acquit herself well at each level. Runners up were Mary Saxer and Kylie Hutson, both at 4.60 meters. To top off the day, Silva attempted the 4.90m vault, although unsuccessfully.

At the close of the Drake University event in Iowa, Silva, from Pinar del Río, created a new Cuban and Central American record and took gold, beating Olympic champion, Jennifer Suhr, from the United States.

In the men’s competition, German Björn Otto won with a jump of 5.80 meters, gaining an advantage over the “unbeatable” Renaud Lavillenie, who finished second with 5.70. (SE)
