Boxing World Series
Cuban team sweeps Poland
MEETING all expectations, Cuba’s Domadores came away
from the 4th Boxing World Series meet in Krakow with
a 5-0 sweep of Poland’s Hussars.
In
the Rafako Factory Arena, the Cuban boxers
demonstrated their uncommon skill with unprecedented
ease, making every minute in the ring seem like a
century to their opponents.
The
first victory was won by middleweight Gerardo
Cervantes (52 kg) from Ciego de Avila, who defeated
Grzegorz Kozlowski, as reflected in the judges’
final scoring of the bout, 50-45, 50-45 and 49-46.
Next
was world champion Lázaro Álvarez (60 kg), who
likewise dominated his opponent Mateusz Polski
(50-45, 49-45 and 50-44), while the new world
runner-up, Arisnoidis Despaigne (69 kg), punished
Rafal Perczynski, forcing him to leave the ring in
the fourth round and winning 30-26, 30-26 and 30-25.
His
was not the only rapid victory, Julio César la Cruz
(81 kg) routed Pawel Stepien, obliging him to throw
in the towel after two left-hand punches just 32
seconds into the third round.
Yoandi Toirac, a promising young boxer from Havana,
delivered his third technical knock-out in a row,
also in the third round, in his fight against
Ukrainian Sergiy Werwejko, after requiring him to
give up several points for protection.
Cuba’s boxers must now concentrate on the Russian
team which they will face next, in the more
challenging leg of the competition, scheduled for
December 6, in Havana’s Ciudad Deportiva coliseum.
