Best juvenile
athletes of 2012
HAVANA.— Yorgelis Rodríguez and
Kevin Hayler Brown, world champions in athletics and
boxing, were chosen as Cuba’s 2012 Juvenile Athletes
of the Year, by specialists at the National
Institute of Sports, Physical Education and
Recreation (INDER) and the Union of Cuban
Journalists’ Sportswriters Circle.
Rodríguez, a heptathlon athlete from
Holguín, won the 14th World Championship in
Barcelona and established a record of 5,994 points
in Havana’s Pan American Stadium. The young boxer
from Camagüey, Brown, took a gold medal in the 64kg
category in the juvenile competition in Yerevan,
Armenia, where he was also chosen the best
participating athlete.
Other young athletes recognized as
outstanding include hurdles racer Jordan O’Farril
and boxers Alexei Damián Guibert and Jorge Luis
Cordero. Completing the list are Osmay Uriarte (volleyball);
Ernesto Vila (artistic gymnastics); triple jumpers
Pedro Pablo Pichardo and Liuba María Zaldívar; as
well as baseball players Rangel Ramos and Dannel
Díaz.
The annual survey of sports
professionals also identified as the most
outstanding in special activities Marcos Aurelio
Filgueiras and Leandro Mayor, two young
practitioners of wushu. (AIN)
