The Cuban women’s duo made up of
Leila Martínez and Lianma Flores won gold in the
Eighth NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit 2014, for
the first time, defeating Tealle Hunkus and Kimberly
Macgiven - representing the United States - in three
sets (2-1).
Victory was secured during the final
of the seventh stop on the tournament circuit, held
at the Puntarenas hotel, in the famous beach resort
of Varadero, in the province of Matanzas.
"We are very happy because we needed
this victory to have more security considering our
plan to fight for the top spot on the podium in the
Central American and Caribbean Games, in Veracruz,
in November," commented Lianma in statements to the
press published by Jit.
The men’s team finished second.
Todd Rodger and Theo Brunner, from
the U.S. broke Cubans Nivaldo Díaz and Sergio
González’ unbeaten run, defeating them 2-1 in the
closing match of the seventh stop of the tournament.
"Although we lost, at least the
satisfaction remains that it was against much
respected rivals, despite the fact that they
defeated us. In the third set I almost had no
strength," confessed Sergio González.
