Cuban female team
wins
Pan American judo championship
The Cuban women’s team took three
golds and three silver medals to become overall
winners of the individual tournament in the Pan
American judo championships in Costa Rica.
The 2012 78kg division Olympic
champion, Idalis Ortiz, Yanet Bermoy in the 52kg,
and Maricet Espinosa, 63kg, were the winners amongst
those trained by Ronaldo Veitía, coming out better
on the winners’ board than the Brazilian female team
(3-1-3) and Canada (1-1-2).
Dayaris Mestre in the 48kg, Onix
Cortés (70) and Heidy Abreu (+78kg) took silver
medals.
The Cuban men’s team, trained by
Justo Noda, won one gold, Asley González at 90kg,
three silvers from Magdiel Estrada (73), José
Armenteros (100) and Oscar Brayson (over 100kg),
with Alex García taking bronze in that category.
These results allowed the Cuban team
to place second in the men’ medal count, behind
Brazil, which won five golds, one silver and two
bronze medals.
The U.S. men’s team was third with
one gold, one silver and five bronze.
Brazil led the overall medals count
with eight golds, two silvers and five bronze medals,
followed by Cuba, with four golds, six silvers, and
