CUBA’S Domadores boxing team gave
Mexico’s Guerreros a 5-0 beating during their Group
"B" match-up, initiating the 4th Boxing World Series
in the Deportivo Plan Sexenal Dome, Mexico City.
Cuban Yosbany Veitía Soto (49 kg)
defeated Joselito Velázquez Altamirano by points in
a great fight, while in the featherweight division
(56 kg), Aarón Alameda also went down on a judges
decision in favor of Cuba’s current Olympic champion,
Robeisy Ramírez Carrazana.
In the super lightweight (64 kg),
World champion, Yasnier Toledo López from Camagüey
overcame fierce resistance put up by Juan Pablo
Romero, while Cuba’s Ramón Luis Nicolás (75 kg)
easily defeated Juan Antonio Mercado.
The final match-up was the most lop-sided,
with Cuba’s heavyweight (91 kg) Erislandy Savón
Cotilla inflicting a dramatic knock-out on French
boxer Djabril Coupe, a member of the Mexican team.
November 22, Cuba will face-off
against Poland’s Hussars. Selected to represent the
team were Gerardo Cervantes (52), Lázaro Álvarez
(60), Arisnoidys Despaigne (69), Julio César La Cruz
and Yoandi Toirac (+91).
The Russians, for their part,
similarly dominated Poland in another Group "B"
match-up, while Germany also swept Algeria in Group
"A" with boxers in the 52, 60, 69, 81 and 91+ kg
divisions.
The defending champions from
Kazakhstan won 4-1 in their bouts with Azerbaijan’s
Baku Fires, to complete Group "B" action.
In Group "A" Italy’s Thunder
defeated Argentina’s Condors and Ukraine defeated
the Knockouts from the United States. (SE)
