Cuban pole vaulter Yarisley Silva is having a
great winter season.

After capturing three titles and a bronze medal
during previous appearances this year, the Olympic
runner-up vaulted for 4.70 meters, equaling her
opponent, the national favorite Holly Bleasdale (who
holds a 4.77m record).
The International Association of Athletics
Federations (IAAF) indicated on its website that
Yarisley needed one more vault to clear the 4.70
mark than did Bleasdale, who bounced back after
being defeated in Poland, just days earlier.
Katie Byres, also from the UK, finished with a
4.35m vault, taking the bronze medal.
Yarisley has taken top honors in three IAAF meets
this season thus far, in Pardubice, Czech Republic (February
5), with a 4.71m vault; Pole Vault Stars in Donetsk,
Ukraine (February 9), 4.76m and Pedro’s Cup, in the
Polish city of Bydgoszcz (February 12) 4.60m. She
finished third in the first meet of the winter in
Moscow, with a 4.65m vault.
Cubans Orlando Ortega and Yordan O’Farrill also
competed in Birmingham, finishing fourth and seventh
respectively in the 60-meter hurdles, which was won
by Omo Osaghae from the United States, with a time
of 7.51 seconds.
The three Cuban athletes will close out their
winter European tour in Stockholm, Sweden, at the
final IAAF meet of the season.
