Cuba reigns on the track

WITH a total of 13 medals (7-4-2), the Cuban
track cycling team finished first among countries in
the Pan American Cycling Championship held in Mexico
City. Colombia (4-6-3) and Venezuela (3-2-6), took
the second and third spots respectively.

Cuba’s most outstanding performance was turned in
by multi-medalist Lisandra Guerra, with a
continental record time in the 500 meters against
the clock and two other titles in Keirin and
individual speed, in addition to a silver medal won
in the team event with Laura Arias.
Marlies Mejías had an excellent performance as
well in the Omnium, taking three titles, winning
this event with 13 points after dominating four of
the six challenges to add this title to the others
she captured in the individual and team races, the
latter with partner Yudelmis Domínguez (who won the
points race) and Arlenis Sierra.
Among Cuba’s male cyclists, Yans Carlos Arias
excelled with two second place finishes (points race
and scratch) and a bronze medal shared with Ramón
Martín in the Madison, while Rubén Campanioni won a
silver medal in the Omnium (m).
