Osleni Guerrero ranked 46th
in the world
• A bronze medal in the Río de
Janeiro Grand Prix contributed to this privileged
position, the best since he began to move up the
list last year
Osleni Guerrero, Cuba’s best badminton player and
continental champion, moved up to 46th place in the
world rankings, a position of unprecedented
privilege for the player, who qualified for the
Olympic Games in Río de Janeiro 2016.
Cuban
badminton player Osleni Guerrero in his greatest
sporting moment, looks with optimism toward the
future.
According to the updated list, published by
the International Badminton Federation, Guerrero
appears as number one in the Pan-American
confederation rankings, given that U.S. Sattawat
Pongnairat, the only other American athlete among
the hundreds of badminton players in the world,
appears in 63rd place with 24,990 points.
For
Osleni, who amassed 29,330 points in 11 tournaments,
this is the best ranking of his career, although
last year he had already ascended to 49th place in a
victorious season including different badminton
events, even taking part in the Badminton Word Cup
held in China.
This
progress is reflected in the bronze medal he won in
the Río de Janeiro Grand Prix, gaining 3,500 points
and contributing to his world ranking.
He
also gained points thanks to gold medals he
previously won in the Peru and Venezuela Opens, as
well as his bronze in the Giraldilla de La Habana.
Guerrero was runner-up in the 2011 Pan-American
Games, in Guadalajara, winner of the 2012 tournament
and is, without a doubt, one of the principal
favorites to take the top spot on the podium at the
Central American and Caribbean Games in Veracruz,
Mexico, in November.
Currently, Cuba’s best badminton player is training
together with the rest of the national team in the
province of Cienfuegos, in preparation for the World
Championship taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark, at
the end of August.
