                            Cuban canoeists win eight of a 
                            possible 12 gold medals

                            Cuba 
                            demonstrated its dominance in the canoeing event of 
                            the 22nd Central American and Caribbean Games, held 
                            in Veracruz, winning eight gold and four silver 
                            medals, of a total of 12 up for grabs. Mexico 
                            secured three gold, four silver and four bronze 
                            medals; followed by Colombia (1-2-2); Venezuela 
                            (0-2-5); and Guatemala (0-0-1).

                            Cuban Amalia Obregón’s performance must be 
                            highlighted given that she won the C-1 200 meters 
                            (1:02.261 minutes) having only been practicing the 
                            sport for barley one year. It was a tight race with 
                            Mexican Abigail Morales (1:02.464) right on 
                            Obregón’s heels, and third place going to Guatemalan 
                            Clara López (1:05.059). 
                            
                            Reinier Torres and Fidel Vargas also won gold in the 
                            K-2 200 meters with a time of 35.935 seconds, faster 
                            than Venezuelans Antonio Oropeza and José Ramos´ 
                            37.271 seconds and Mexicans Jordan Salazar and 
                            Santos Marroquín’s 37.  |
