Cuban triple jumper wins gold medal
in Brazil
Eyleen Ríos López
CUBAN triple jumper Ernesto Revé made his fourth
jump this year over 17 meters and won a gold medal
May 12, in Belem, the first stop of Brazil's
Athletics Grand Prix.
On
this occasion, his distance was 17.37 meters,
reached on his second attempt in Mangueirão Stadium,
enough to take the lead from locals Jefferson Dias
(16.61) and Jonathan Henrique Silva (16.43).
Revé,
who missed the 2012 season due to injury, made the
best jump of the year worldwide, 17.46 meters,
during the Cuba Cup in March. Previously he had
jumped for 17.11 and 17.35 meters in preparatory
competitions.
The
2010 World Juvenile runner-up is among those who
appear to be assured a spot in the Moscow World
Championships, this coming August, where he is
hoping to be among the eight finalists.
Also
in the Belem Grand Prix, Cuban pole vaulter Lázaro
Borges reached 5.40 meters, to share the bronze
medal with Canadian Jason Wurster.
Borges made it over the 5.20m bar on his second
attempt and the 5.40m on his first, but failed three
times to vault for 5.60 meters.
Brazilian Augusto de Oliveira, the South American
record-holder, vaulted for 5.70 meters, to take the
title, followed by his compatriot Fabio Gomes da
Silva (5.50m).
