Cuban
boxers triumph in Córdoba Cardín tournament
Cuba won the
International Córdova Cardín Boxing tournament, with
fighters procuring six gold medals on the final day
of a competition, which concluded June 15, at
Havana’s sports complex Coliseum, with the
participation of athletes from 18 countries.
The medal
results by country are as follows: Cuba, 6 gold, 1
silver, 6 bronze (6-1-6); China (2-5-2); Ecuador
(2-1-2); Venezuela (0-1-6); Morocco (0-1-1); Chile
(0-1-1); Trinidad and Tobago (0-0-1) and Argentina
(0-0-1).
During the
final day of the competition, in the lightweight
division, the young Armando Martínez — son of Moscow
1980 Olympic champion Armando Martínez — defeated
Wang Lei of China.
China’s Gu
Guangming’s no show immediately passed the victory
to the outstanding Yoandris Toirac. Featherweight
Norlan Yera and cruiserweight Frank Sánchez both
defeated their Chinese opponents Zhang Jiawei and
Wang Xuanhuan, respectively, while welterweight Luis
Oliva beat Moroccan Elbarbari Hamsa and was
proclaimed the competition’s best.
Middleweight
Emilio Correa won his bout after a no show by
Venezuelan Juan Carlos Rodríguez.
Boxers from
Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Chile,
Russia, China, Morocco, Honduras, Argentina, Chile,
Hungary, Sri Lanka, Surinam, Trinidad and Tobago,
Sweden, the Bahamas, Mauritania, the Cayman Islands
and Cuba, participated in the Córdova Cardín
tournament.
Head coach
Rolando Acebal called upon his reserves from their
respective divisions in the tournament, giving his
stars - on Cuba’s Dominators team, which recently
won the 4th World Series of Boxing (WSB) - a well
deserved break.
Once again
Cuba’s signature competitiveness surpassed that of
