Yarelys Barrios and Yarisley Silva
give Cuba its first medals
DISCUS thrower Yarelys Barrios and pole-vaulter
Yarisley Silva, who won bronze medals at the 14th
World Athletics Championships in Moscow, have
given Cuba 20th place to date on the country medals
list and 15th in the general ranking, thanks to 13
points accumulated.
In her most recent performance, Silva, aged 26,
Olympic silver medalist, took a well deserved third
place in a tight final, jumping 4.82 meters on her
third attempt.
The gold went to super-star Russian Elena
Isinbayeva, who bade farewell to active sports with
a vault of 4.49 meters, while the silver was taken
by U.S. Jennifer Suhr, with 4.82 meters in her
second jump.
In the Luzhniki Stadium, Barrios ensured Cuba a
bronze medal with a throw of 64.96 meters, only
exceeded by the Croat super-star Sandra Perkovic
(67.99) and French Melina Robert-Michon (66.28).
Barrios, aged 30 years, enjoyed her fourth
consecutive place on the world medals platform in
Moscow, as she also took silvers in Osaka 2007
(63.90) and Berlin 2009 (65.31), and a bronze in
Daegu 2011 (65.73).
The country medals table for the 14th World
Athletics Championships is currently dominated by
the United States, with four golds, five silvers and
one bronze, for a total of 127 points; Russia
(3-1-2, 70); and Germany (2-2-1, 64) in the first
three places. (SE)
