Cuba wins ninth title

Sigfredo Barros

FOR the ninth time, a Cuban team has taken top honors at the traditional World Port Baseball Tournament in Rotterdam, defeating Holland 4-0, with an excellent performance by Pinar del Río pitchers Wilber Pérez and Raciel Iglesias. The team’s 12 hits allowed Cuba to take the lead early in the game.

Cuba took top honors in batting, pitching and fielding.

Left-hander Wilber dominated the local favorites for five and a third innings, allowing only a pair of hits, without runs. When he gave up two bases in the 6th inning, manager Yovani Aragón called on Iglesias, who once again did the job, allowing but one single and delivering four strike-outs, to end the tournament with four games saved and 11 strikeouts, in 7 and a third innings.

The Cuban team led by Aragón was first in three categories: batting .283 overall; pitching: 1.48 ERA, with 59 strikeouts and 17 walks; and fielding, only two errors in 252 pitches, 992.
