Cuba crowned champion of 4th Boxing
World Series
Baku.- With large doses of fighting spirit and
courage, the Cuban team was crowned champion of the
4th Boxing World Series, after defeating the Baku
Fires squad from Azerbaijan 6-5.

Down
2-3, the Azerbaijanis triumphed in the June 7 round,
taking the score to 3-2 and forcing a tie break
match to decide the winner of the tournament.
In
the final match, Arisnoidys Despaigne,
2013 AIBA World Boxing
Championship silver medalist in the 69kg category,
won a decisive 3-0 (49-46, 49-46, 49-46) victory
over Yauheni Ramashkevich, giving Cuba its first
World Series title in its debut in the competition.
The
spirited left hander Yosbany Veitía (49 kg) opened
the road to victory in the June 6 day of the
competition with his eighth successive win in the
tournament, defeating Khamza Nametov in a melee,
resulting in a unanimous verdict (49-46, 49-46,
49-46) at the Serhedchi Olympic Center.
Two
more victories were won on this day; Arlen López
(75kg) from Guantánamo who with a series of hooks
and uppercuts, defeated Khaybula Musalov (50-44,
49-45 and 49-45). It was then down to Erislandy
Savón (91kg) to finish the opening against the Baku
Fires, taking advantage of his greater reach to beat
Abdulkadir Abdullayev (49-46, 49-46, 49-46).
Norlan Yera the novice from Villa Clara and
Yasnier Toledo from Camagüey were the only Cuban
boxers to be defeated,
Yera
losing to Magomed Gurbarnov (47-48, 47-48, 47-48) in
the 56kg category and Toledo – for the second time –
against Gaybatulla Gadzhialiyev (47-48, 48-47,
47-48) in the 64kg.
On
the second day, Elvin Mamishzada (52 kg) opened with
a clear win over Gerardo Cervantes 3-0 (50-45,
49-45, 50-44) to even up the match.
The
Cubans again took the advantage with Rosniel
Iglesias’ victory in the 69kg, over Mahamed
Nurudzinau, 3-0 (49-46, 49-46, 48-47) a rival who he
surpassed in skill and experience.
The
Baku Fires came back again, taking a 5-4 lead thanks
to Albert Selimov’s
(60 kg) win against Lázaro Álvarez, 2-1(48-47,
46-49, 48-47) on a judges decision and the
Azerbaijani’s reinforcement from Belarus, Arslanbek
Makhmudov’s
(91+kg)
victory against José Ángel Larduet, also 2-1 (49-46,
48-47, 47-48).
The
Azerbaijani team came close to the crown, but Julio
César La Cruz (81 kg) gave them a boxing lesson in
his bout against Mikhail Dauhaliavets, winning 3-0
(50-45, 50-45, 50-45) levelling the score at 5-5,
leaving the final match to be decided by Despaigne
who triumphed over Ramashkevich.
