Cuban Medical
Brigade leads the way
• Paraguay’s Minister of
Health praised the efforts of Cuba’s medical brigade,
calling their work exemplary and expressed his
intention to strengthen ties between the two
countries’ health ministries
ON November 25, Paraguay’s Vice-president
Juan Afara visited the Cuban medical brigade working
in the María Auxiliadora district, more than 400km
from the capital.
Prensa Latina reported that
the Cuban specialists working in Operation Miracle
have – through the project’s free surgery and
treatment - restored or improved the vision of
thousands of citizens.
Afara was accompanied on the visit
by Minister of Public Health and Social Wellbeing
Antonio Barrios and other officials, who spoke with
members of the Cuban brigade and observed their
dedicated work first hand.
After seeing the Cuban personnel at
work in the clinic, Barrios instructed Vice-Minister
of Health María Teresa Barán to increase regular
communication with brigade members and discuss
aspects of the current collaboration between the two
countries.
Afara and his companions described
the ongoing work of the Cuban brigade as exemplary.
In the last few months alone, Cuban doctors have
treated 2,348 patients and performed 371 cataracts
surgeries and 895 for pterygium. Barrios
congratulated Boris Luis, head of the medical
mission, and extended his thanks to the rest of the
team, stating that he himself will focus on
strengthening relations between the two countries’
Ministries of Health.
