Voices continue to be raised
for The Five
Washington. - More than 500 people from 26
countries, including parliamentarians from El
Salvador, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Chile,
Nicaragua, and Germany came together in front of the
White House, to demand the release of Gerardo
Hernández, Ramón Labañino and Antonio Guerrero,
three of the five Cuban anti-terrorists still
incarcerated in the U.S.

As part of the initial activities planned for the 3rd
Five Days for The Five, in Washington D.C. from June
4-11 a panel discussion was held with Miguel Barnet,
president of the Union of Cuban Writers and Artists
(UNEAC); Cindy Sheehan, U.S. political activist, and
journalist Ignacio Ramonet, participating.
Barnet stated that “The Five have never stopped
being free, even behind bars they are freer than the
air, which has allowed them to continue writing and
creating artwork.” In the name of Cuban writers and
artists he thanked the participants for their
support and tireless struggle to free The Five.
Sheehan, called on participants to intensify the
movement to such an extent that the U.S.
administration has no choice but to free The Five,
she also said “we must demand their freedom…not beg
for it”.
Ramonet concluded the discussion highlighting the
fact that Cuba is one of the countries that has
suffered most from terrorist attacks, the majority
originating from the U.S.
The activities continue with a commemoration for
former Chilean minister Orlando Letelier and his
assistant Ronni Moffitt in the Dupont Circle, where
they were assassinated in 1976, by terrorists
including Cubans based in Miami.
Today, Monday June 9, international parliamentarians
will visit Congress, where they will explain to
their U.S. counterparts the need to end the
injustice committed against the Five Cuban Heroes.
