Statement in
support of the International Day for the Total
Elimination of Nuclear Weapons
• The Commission of
International Relations of the National Assembly of
Popular Power expresses its rejection of nuclear
weapons as well as the doctrines that seek to
justify their use
On the occasion of the first ever
International Day for the Total Elimination of
Nuclear Weapons, this September 26, as decided by
the United Nations General Assembly, we wish to
express the intention of Cuba’s deputies to continue
to unite our efforts for the prohibition and total
elimination of nuclear weapons.
We reject the possession and
development of nuclear weapons, as well all forms of
nuclear testing and the doctrines which seek to
justify the use or the threat of the use of these
arms. The huge financial resources dedicated today
to nuclear weapons, should be assigned to the
promotion of peace, sustainable development and a
decent life for all human beings.
We ratify our pride at belonging to
the first densely populated area of the world to be
declared a Nuclear Weapons Free Zone, through the
Treaty of Tlatelolco, and we are also happy to form
part of the region which reached the historic
milestone of being formally proclaimed a Zone of
Peace at the Second Summit of the Community of Latin
American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in Havana,
January 29, in an aim to forever prohibit the use
and the threat of the use of force in our region.
We support the initiation of urgent
negotiations on an international convention on the
total elimination of nuclear weapons, which will
prohibit the development, production, acquisition,
testing, storing, transfer, use or threat of the use
of these weapons and stipulate their destruction.
As our Commander in Chief, Fidel
Castro Ruz, has expressed on various occasions,
humanity finds itself at a crucial moment in its
history; the threats to the survival of our species
are increasingly serious and alarming, the only
guarantee that nuclear weapons can not be used by
anyone is their absolute prohibition and elimination.
It is for these reasons that we call
for all parliamentarians across the world to promote
actions aimed at eliminating nuclear arms from the
face of the Earth, together will all weapons of mass
destruction, in order to guarantee a world of peace
and free from nuclear weapons for future generations.
Commission of International
Relations of the National Assembly of Popular Power.
