ALBA-TCP Summit receives
international coverage

On October 20, Secretary-General of the Union of
South American Nations (Unasur), Ernesto Samper,
sent a message of greetings to the ALBA-TCP Summit
on Ebola,
Via his Twitter account the former President of
Colombia stated “Greetings from Quito, Ecuador, to
Cuba, where the ALBA-TCP member countries are
considering effective measures against the spread of
Ebola.”
In New York, UN Secretary-General spokesperson
Stephane Dujarric, highlighted Cuba’s contribution
to the fight against Ebola, having sent a medical
brigade to West Africa.
Responding to a question by Prensa Latina,
Dujarric recalled that on various occasions Ban Ki-moon
has highlighted Cuba’s contribution.
Meanwhile, various press agencies around the world
emphasized the cooperation agreements and actions
approved by ALBA countries´ in their efforts to
combat Ebola.
“Latin American Presidents prepare joint action
against Ebola; ALBA to realize plan to tackle Ebola
focusing on prevention and offering assistance to
the Caribbean; ALBA countries announce cooperation
efforts to tackle Ebola epidemic,” were some of the
headlines which appeared in El Salvador.
Online editions of Colatino, El Mundo, La
Prensa Gráfica and radio and television programs
highlighted the Havana Summit, where agreements were
made to combine and coordinate forces in order to
prevent and combat the epidemic.
In addition, Spanish newspaper El País
published the headline: “Cuba among the vanguard in
the fight against Ebola”, stating that, in contrast,
the European Union has avoided committing to any
concrete measures to combat Ebola.
Dujarric stated in a note that on October 20, Cuban
President Raúl Castro confirmed his intention to
send two more Cuban medical contingents to Liberia
and Guinea, adding to the 461 specialists and nurses
who have been preparing themselves in Cuba over
recent weeks, to tackle the emergency.
Mexican newspaper Milenio also highlighted
the ALBA-TCP Summit and the plan to prevent the
spread of the virus in the region.
Dujarric reiterated the Cuban President’s words when
he called to avoid “any form of politicization” of
the global fight against Ebola and offered the U.S.
and Canada Cuban assistance in training specialists.
She also emphasized Cuba’s solidarity and
cooperation efforts, with more than 25,000 of the
Island’s health workers serving in 23 countries
across Latin America and the Caribbean.
