Officer who killed
black teenager in Ferguson still free
WASHINGTON – Over a month after the
shooting of black teenager Michael Brown in the U.S.
suburb of Ferguson (Missouri) the white police
officer who killed him has still not faced
prosecution.
A group of protesters burst into a
meeting of St. Louis County authorities (county in
which Ferguson is located) to demand the arrest of
Darren Wilson.
The protesters, among whom were
Brown’s parents, requested "justice for all" and
expressed their intention to continue to press for
Wilson’s prosecution for the crime which he has yet
to be tried for.
According to activists, there is
sufficient evidence for the St. Louis County
Prosecuting Attorney, Bob McCulloch, to order the
arrest of the officer, without the need for a
decision from a grand jury, which could take months.
On August 9, Wilson shot 18 year old
Brown several times in broad daylight.
Eye witnesses said that the youth,
who was unarmed, was shot despite showing no
resistance and having his hands in the air.
The incident sparked a wave of
protests and riots which were violently repressed by
the police and National Guard. The acts spread to
dozens of other cities in the United States,
reigniting the race debate in the country.
Brown’s death served as a catalyst
for the Attorney General, Eric Holder, to launch an
investigation into racial profiling in five cities.
