UN highlights that violence
has escalated to a humanitarian
crisis in Libya
UNITED NATIONS.— The United Nations Organization
(UN) informed that over 330,000 people are in need
of urgent humanitarian assistance in Libya, among
them 287,000 who have been displaced due to the
sectarian violence in the country.
According to the Office for the Coordination of
Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the situation is most
complex in the capital of Tripoli and in Benghazi,
although other cities are also suffering the impact
of clashes between armed groups who seek to control
the territory and its resources.
An
additional 35 million dollars are required to
provide the victims of the crisis with food, medical
attention and hygiene products.
The
Office recalled that the violence forced the
majority of the international agencies operating in
the country, including the UN, to leave. Aid is
distributed through local partners and UN personnel.
Assassinations, explosions, kidnappings and other
crimes are frequent in Libya, ever since the
instability of 2011 when NATO intervention led to
the overthrow and assassination of Muamar el Gadafi.
As
well as those who have been internally displaced,
some 100,000 Libyans left to seek refuge in
neighboring countries. (PL)
