A continuous struggle
Karina Marrón González
Although there is still much to be done given that
Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero and Ramón
Labañino remain in prison, the solidarity movement
has reached a level of development enabling it to
meet the challenge of organizing actions of greater
impact and reach, crucially in the United States, so
that the Cuban antiterrorists can finally return to
their families and homeland.
These were the sentiments expressed - during a press
conference - by Alicia Jrapko and Bill Hackwell,
tireless fighters for the cause of the Cuban Five
who recently received the
Friendship Medal
of the Republic of Cuba.
The links which have been formed between different
solidarity groups in order to work together across
the globe, especially during the 5 Days for the
Cuban Five event, as well as the participation of
people from 32 countries in the activities which
took place in Washington in June, are examples of
the unity vital to making the injustice of this case
visible.
During the conference Jrapko and Hackwell commented
on the importance of exerting increased pressure on
all sectors of U.S. society: academics, unionists,
religious communities; but crucially to bring
information about the Cuban Five to the attention of
Members of Congress, senators and anyone else with
power of decision or influence to secure the release
of Gerardo, Antonio and Ramón.
The movement’s principal actions include promoting
the case via social networks and engaging with
target audiences such as students from the various
universities based in Washington.
“We feel that the people of the United States are a
loving people, but who are generally kept in the
dark in regards to information. The media doesn’t
talk about the case of the Cuban Five and constantly
distorts the reality of Cuba. That is why we believe
it to be so important to promote the truth,”
emphasized Bill Hackwell.
The next 5 Days for the Cuban Five will take place
in September 2015, with preparations already
underway. Other actions will continue throughout the
year given that the struggle is continuous.
