An encounter with
British culture
Starting today until October 19,
various spaces across the capital will host the III
British Week in Havana. Once again, the event will
see the most representative of the arts from this
European country with a range of films, music,
theatre and exhibitions.
According to the program, the Week
will begin today with the inauguration of the
Charles Darwin exhibition at the National
Natural History Museum (10.00am) and The UK in
Cuba exhibition at the Alma Mater bookstore.
Later on at 6.00pm the Las Carolinas Theatre will
host Checkpoint, a performance featuring
emblematic personalities of the country, followed by
a multimedia show by the group Danza Teatro Retazos
titled God Save The Queen.
Tomorrow will see the group Teatro
el Publico perform Yilliam de Bala, Koming Sun
at the Trianon Theatre at 8.00pm. The book launch of
Arroyo Blanco, Churchill’s route through Cuba,
as well as a conference entitled, Itinerario
inedito de Winston Churchill durante la guerra de
independencia en Cuba, will be held at
the Castillo de la Real Fuerza from 4.00pm.
Sunday will see Cuba´s Contemporary
Dance Group present Dusty Days, a play based
on Romeo and Juliet, in the Casa Gaia Theatre
of Old Havana at 8.00pm. On Monday 13, the play
Psychosis, based on the works of English
playwright, Sarah Kane, can be seen at the Trianon
Theatre.
Next Tuesday the Week will continue
with the inauguration of a programme of British
films in the Cine 23 y 12, which will run until the
following Sunday and includes films such as The
Invisible Woman, The Selfish Giant and
Philomena, plus the documentaries The
Impostor and Dreams of a Life.
The final days of the festival will
be dedicated to children with Alice in Wonderland
at the Las Estaciones Theatre (from Saturday 18 to
Sunday 19 at 10.00am).
There will also be a series of
concerts including Tropical con Swing in the
Salon Rosado of the Tropical, on Friday 17 from
9.30pm, a unique performance by the talented British
violinist, Ruth Palmer, together with the Camerana
Romeo on Saturday 18 at 6.00pm in the Basílica Menor
del Convento de San Francisco de Asis and to close
the festival, the concert Courtly Music from the
Reign of Elizabeth I, by the Conjunto de Musica
Antigua Ars Longa at 7.00pm in the Iglesia de Paula.
