Artemisa to host
national July 26 commemorative event
The western province of Atemisa has
been chosen as the site of upcoming July 26
celebrations, commemorating National Rebellion Day,
when tribute is paid to those who assaulted the
Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Garrisons in
1953, events which led to the final stage of Cuba’s
insurrectional independence struggle.

The Communist Party of Cuba’s
Political Bureau chose the new province, founded
three years ago as part of a territorial re-organization,
to host the national celebrations given its strong
connection to the historic events which occurred in
Santiago de Cuba and Bayamo.
The province was the first to begin
implementing a new conception of political
leadership and administration, contributing valuable
experience which will allow changes to be extended
across the country. The location of the Mariel
Special Development Zone and new port in Artemisa
means that the province plays a key role in the
country’s present and future economic development.
Artemisa
is the country’s largest producer of vegetables and
eggs.
These facilities will allow for an
increase in exports; the effective replacement of
imports with domestic products; advanced technology
projects; and local development, in addition to
providing an important source of employment. Some
1,500 Artemisans are already working on the colossal
project. Artemisa is the country’s largest producer
of vegetables and eggs, is increasing its tobacco
production, and is known for its outstanding work in
the pork and bee-keeping industries.
Actively involved in the updating of
Cuba’s economic model, the province has awarded some
63,788 hectares of unused land to individuals and
cooperatives, to promote the development of
livestock farming and agricultural production.
Artemisa has also made significant
progress in the construction of housing and the
organization of university studies.
