Santa Clara to play
tribute to Che
SANTA CLARA. — With equal devotion
to that in 1958, when Che first entered this city,
the people of Santa Clara, representing all of Cuba,
will pay heartfelt tribute to the Heroic Guerrilla
this October 8, in commemoration of the 47th
anniversary of his death in combat on Bolivian soil.

From the early hours of the morning,
a group of distinguished youngsters will lead the
traditional changing of the flowers at the Memorial
that hosts the remains of the fallen, while students
of the Camilo Cienfuegos Military School will
conduct a Guard of Honor at the Mausoleum of the
Fighters of the Las Villas Front, which will be
repeated on October 16.
Similarly, thousands of first grade
children will be initiated as pioneers and receive
their neck scarves in ceremonial events held at each
school, while other schools will assemble in the
square to evoke the hero of the Battle of Santa
Clara.
In the sculptural complex that bears
his name, several documentaries on his exploits will
be screened throughout the day, most notably
El vano intento de esconder la luz (The
futile attempt to hide the light) produced by the
Centro de Estudios Che Guevara, which looks at the
science employed in
finding his remains.
One of the most significant
activities will take place in the afternoon, when
thousands of students will participate in the
traditional university march "Che's Route", which
will involve all tertiary education institutions in
the province, along with students from other areas,
and will conclude at the Leoncio Vidal Park with a
concert by singer-songwriter David Blanco.
In the evening, the main square will
see 47 young militants of the Young Communist League
(UJC) recieve their membership cards, concluding
with a cantata for the Cuban Five and against
terrorism.
In the context of the activities in
honor of Commandante Guevara, the anniversary of his
and other fighters’ remains arrival in Santa Clara
in 1997, will be celebrated on October 17, with the
premiere of the documentary El Regreso
(The Return).
Similarly, on October 14, the moment
the late President of the Bolivarian Republic of
Venezuela and dear friend of Cuba, Hugo Rafael
Chávez Frías, visited the Sculptural Complex, from
where he broadcast his Alo Presidente program, will
be remembered.
