Vilma Espín Guillois, an enduring symbol of the
participation of women in Cuba’s revolutionary
struggle and the construction of a new society, was
honored April 7, at the Frank País Second Eastern
Front Mausoleum, on the 84th anniversary
of her birth.
Leading the tribute were Teresa Amarelle, secretary
general of the Federation of Cuban Women, and Lázaro
Expósito, first secretary of the Communist Party of
Cuba in the province. A wreath was placed, in the
name of the Cuban people, beside the huge rock which
forms part of the monument where her ashes rest,
surrounded by the orchids, ferns and bouganvilla
which grow naturally at the site.

Prior to the ceremony, women from the neighboring
hills held a procession to the site as they do every
year on this date, to honor Vilma, the first
president of the Cuban Federation of Women, as well
as all the martyrs and heroes who fell during
battles on the guerrilla front here, led by
Comandante Raúl Castro Ruz.
On
the same day, in the city of Santiago de Cuba, the
second “In Vilma’s memory” workshop took place,
along with the opening of a exposition entitled
Siempre juntos (Always together), dedicated to the
heroine of the underground and guerilla struggle,
located in the house where she spent a good portion
of her life. (acn)
