THE
Cuban delegation to the 18th World Festival of Youth
and Students, Ecuador 2013, including 200 members
representing diverse sectors of society, was
presented with the Cuban flag on December 2, Day of
the Revolutionary Armed Forces and the anniversary
of the landing of the Granma yacht expedition
in 1956.
Second
Secretary of the Communist Party José Ramón Machado
Ventura handed the national flag to Yuniasky Crespo
Baquero, first secretary of the Union of Young
Communists’ National Committee, at the Granma
Memorial adjoining Havana’s Museum of the
Revolution, the location of the yacht which, with 82
expeditionaries aboard, left Tuxpan, Mexico for Cuba
to continue the struggle for the country’s total
independence.
In
the event, First Vice President Miguel Díaz-Canel
awarded visual artist Ernesto Rancaño the Abel
Santamaría Medal. This presentation took place after
the screening of a short documentary in which the
late Comandante Juan Almeida Bosque spoke about the
creative process which went into his song “La Lupe,”
later performed by the Mariachi Juvenil group. The
outstanding work of a group of young teachers in the
education of new generations was also highlighted.
Also
present at the national event were José Ramón
Balaguer, member of the Central Committee
Secretariat; and Ena Elsa Velázquez and Rodolfo
Alarcón, ministers of Education and Higher
Education, respectively.
The
Festival, which takes place December 7 through 13 in
Quito, is dedicated to Eloy Alfaro, leader of the
Liberal Revolution of Ecuador (1895-1924);
Comandante Hugo Chávez; and Kwame Nkrumah, the
Ghanaian independence leader.
The
festival, which brings together progressive youth
from around the world, is the fourth to take place
in Latin America and the Caribbean. Cuba received
the 11th edition in 1978, and the 14th in 1997,
while Venezuela was the host country for the 16th,
in 2005. The maxim of the upcoming festival is
“Youth united against imperialism, for peace,
solidarity and social transformation.”
