CIENFUEGOS.—Wreaths in the name of Fidel and Raúl were placed at the pantheon in the Tomás Acea Cemetery, where the mortal remains of Carlos Rafael Rodríguez, previously interred in Havana’s Colón Cemetery, were laid to rest in the city in which he was born on May 23, 1913.

The solemn ceremony, which took place on the centenary of the birth of the outstanding political leader, humanist and intellectual, was attended by Council of State Vice President Salvador Valdés Mesa; José Ramón Balaguer Cabrera, member of the Central Committee Secretariat; Rodrigo Rodríguez Zanabria, member of the Provincial Bureau of the Communist Party; Provincial Government President Mairelys Pernía Cordero, and members of Carlos Rodríguez’ family.

Valdés Mesa noted that it is the responsibility of the current generations to move forward and consolidate the process of updating the country’s economic model in order to perfect our society, and make it sustainable and prosperous, the objective for which Carlos Rafael Rodríguez lived, dreamed and fought.

Dania Rodríguez, daughter of the revolutionary, who died in Havana in 1997, stated that the family warmly welcomed the idea of his remains being laid to rest in Cienfuegos, his native city, which he never abandoned and where he is dearly loved and remembered.

The urn bearing his remains was placed in a niche designed by Oscar Rodríguez, an architect at Havana City Historian’s Office, after an artillery salvo and military march played by the Revolutionary Armed Forces Chief of Staff Music Band.

During the conclusion of the central event marking the centenary in the Tomás Terry Theater, Dr. Eduardo Torres-Cuevas described Carlos Rafael Rodríguez as one of the most powerful intellectual brains of the Cuban 20th century, who clearly appreciated what a revolution such as the Cuban one represented.
