Juan Formell, leader of
Los Van Van dies
• The death of Juan Formell, a
legend of Cuban music, was reported on national
television Thursday evening
The
artist’s ashes will be placed in the lobby of the
National Theater, today May 2, from 1:00 and 7:00pm,
where the Cuban people may pay their respects. A
Cantata for Formell will be held May 3 across the
country, with the participation of musicians from
all genres. The Havana event will take place in
Parque Trillo to honor the great man and artist who
was Juan Formell
Formell was born in Havana, August 2, 1942. The
bassist, arranger, composer, singer and producer
began his career at 15 years of age, as a musician
in cabaret, radio and television bands. He became
well-known with the Orquesta Revé, before founding
Los Van Van, which is celebrating its 45th
anniversary this year.
Formell was awarded the 2003 National Prize for
Music in Cuba, in addition to numerous other honors,
and a Latin Grammy Lifetime
Achievement Award in 2013.
