“WITH this exercise we have taken one more step in
strengthening the defense of our Revolution. We must
constantly study and perfect each one of the tactics
and methods we use to be prepared for any enemy
aggression,” affirmed Army General President Raúl
Castro Ruz, during the “Bastion 2013”
videoconference on November 22 which concluded the
strategic exercise. “Averting war is equivalent to
winning it, but in order to win by averting it
involves spending more than a few resources which we
could direct to other issues vital for the
population and the development of the country.
Rivers of sweat and effort are necessary to avoid
rivers of bloodshed, suffering and tears on the part
of our people,” Raúl stated, while issuing a call to
prepare for the next Bastión exercise, scheduled for
2016.
In
the name of the National Defense Council the Cuban
President congratulated the people of Cuba for the
satisfactory undertaking of the activities
organized.
During the videoconference, Raúl explained that
over the preceding days, the country had simulated
moving toward a state of war and the systematic
wearing down of the enemy, issues closely addressed
by the chiefs of the Eastern, Central and Western
armies, as well as presidents of various provincial
defense councils.
Raúl
inquired about the experiences acquired during the
exercise. In a general context, it was emphasized
that throughout the country dynamics very close to
reality were put into practice, thus raising the
level of preparation and cohesion of direction and
command entities. At the same time, the enthusiastic
participation of university students was
highlighted.
Present at the “Bastion 2013” videoconference were
National Defense Council Vice Presidents José Ramón
Machado Ventura and Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez; Army
Corps Generals Abelardo Colomé Ibarra and Leopoldo
Cintra Frías, Ministers of the Interior and the
Revolutionary Armed Forces, respectively; as well as
other chiefs and officers.
The
final event of the Bastion 2013 strategic exercise
were the national days of defense organized
throughout the country on November 23 and 24, which
involved the mass presence of the people in uniform.
