Raúl Castro congratulates the
Contemporary Dance of Cuba on
their 55th anniversary
Army General and President of the Councils of State
and Ministers Raúl Castro sent a message of
congratulations to the Contemporary Dance of Cuba (DCC),
which according to Minister of Culture, Julián
González, “is an exemplary model of Cuban dance.”
After
receiving the honor, during a press conference held
at the National Theater’s Piano Bar Delirio Habanero,
Miguel Iglesias, director of the DCC - one of the
most renowned in the world, thanked all those who
have worked with and supported the company, adding
that the DCC is different today than it was 55 years
ago when it was founded, however, if there is one
thing which makes it different, he said, is the
energy of its dancers and the risk of doing new
things every day.
González also announced the start of the company’s
national tour which will begin this weekend in
Holguín, then move to Cienfuegos during its first
stage. Critic Omar Valiño stated that the
Contemporary Dance of Cuba is mother to a school, to
a way of watching and considering dance,”
emphasizing the DCC’s extensive musical
collaboration. “They do not only contribute to dance
but also to our culture,” he stated.
Also presented during the conference was the DVD,
Danza, el
milagro de Cuba, by Ediciones
Cubarte announcing the company’s next project which,
from November 14-16, will include the debut of two
new works by DCC choreographers Luvyen Mederos and
Norge Cedeño, at the Teatro Mella; while
The Family,
a piece by Julio César Iglesias, will be on from
December 16-17, also at the Teatro Mella.
Also in December rehearsals will begin for a new
piece by Belgian-Colombian choreographer Annabelle
López Ochoa, which will be on from January 9-11,
2015 in the Teatro Mella. Next year the DCC will be
working on Dance/Choreography and digital art, a
piece by British choreographer Billy Cowie (pioneer
in combining virtual and real dancers in
choreographed works) performing
Tangos Cubanos
from February 13-15; while
Capricis
(AngelsMargarit-Contemporary Dance of Cuba-Maercat
de Les Floras) will be running from June through
August; and
Cubanía
a project by Carlos Acosta and the Royal Opera House
will be on in July. Two cinematic projects will also
be underway from 2014-2016; one,
La
Saga de Daniel,
a feature length fiction film directed by
Rolando Almirante and the other, a documentary by
Chilean filmmaker Fernando Valenzuela.
During 2014 the presence of the DCC dancers was felt
on stages in Holland, Germany, Switzerland,
Luxemburg, Cali and England, where they received the
highest praise from critics and public approval,
showing that the Contemporary Dance of Cuba “is a
model in the global art of dance.”
