Architectural Guide awarded Cuban
Academy of Sciences Prize
MATANZAS and Las Villas: Architecture and Landscape
Guide,
which provides scholars and travelers alike, with an
itinerary of the finest heritage sites the two
regions have to offer, was awarded the Cuban Academy
of Sciences Prize for its notable research
contribution.
Natural and urban environments in central and
eastern areas of the island are depicted in the
bilingual - Spanish and English - edition, with
emphasis on the evolution of different colonial
styles, eclectic, art nouveau, art deco and
modernist approaches that defined the look of entire
buildings.
Ramón Recondo Pérez, prestigious architect and
curator of the volume, published in 2012, said that
this valuable work until then unpublished, provides
most notably, original building plans which allow
for a more comprehensive characterization of the
different constructions featured.
Sites in the provinces of Matanzas, Villa Clara,
Cienfuegos and Sancti Spíritus, previously located
within the former boundaries of Las Villas, are also
featured in the 400 page guide.
Luis González Arestuche, another of the book’s
authors, emphasized that the generous use of color
photographs and the work of a multidisciplinary team
of experts, has enabled him to offer readers a
useful book through which they may familiarize
themselves with, and promote the conservation of,
Cuba’s rich array of national heritage sites.
Sponsored by the Marta Abreu Central University,
with the support of the Junta de Andalucía, the
guide covers different areas such as Trinidad, a
World Heritage Site, and Varadero, which together
with Havana, possess the finest examples of
contemporary Cuban architecture. (AIN)
