FAO recognizes Cuba’s
potential in the development of
sustainable agriculture
Theodor Friedrich, representative of the UN Food and
Agriculture Organization in Cuba said that the
island has great potential to develop sustainable
agriculture.
Addressing
participants at the 11th International Forum
CubaSolar 2014, which promotes renewable energy
initiatives, underway in Varadero April 23-25, in
the western province of Matanzas, the expert said
that the Cuban scientific community has the
political will and necessary knowledge to foster
what is known as the paradigm of conservationist
agriculture, though he stressed the need to
introduce modifications to preserve the soil.
In
his remarks, the FAO representative said that the
world is facing the challenge of maintaining food
security, with high prices and unavailability of
foodstuffs, as obstacles, among others.
In
2050, the world will need to feed nine billion
people; it is therefore crucial to change models of
food production and distribution, since 30% of food
produced is being wasted, the expert said.
The
forum is also addressing renewable energy sources,
water supply, among other issues related to
environment. Experts from 11 nations from Europe and
the Americas are attending the conference. (AIN)
