Cienfuegos port to
have modern
cruise ship terminal
According to Prensa Latina, a
new project has been presented to build a modern
cruise ship terminal at the Cuban port of
Cienfuegos, the second largest in the country in
regards to its volume of operations.
José Enrique González,
representative from the Ministry of Tourism (MINTUR)
in Cienfuegos, stated that the project will be
directed by the Ministry of Transport (MINTRANS).
"We are thinking big, we are talking
about something on a global scale," González
emphasized whilst presenting the ambitious project.
Proof of the revitalization of the
cruise industry is evident in the target arrivals
for the winter season, included in the Cienfuegos
MINTUR portfolio of services, where 53 cruise ships
are scheduled to arrive at the so-called Pearl of
the South.
Of this number, 37 will dock at
berths surrounding the city of Cienfuegos’ historic
center, declared an UNESCO World Heritage site, and
the location of the newly planned cruise ship
terminal. The other 16 will operate in the open
waters of the Caribbean Sea, close to the Faro Luna
hotel on Rancho Luna beach.
Last season, the number of stops
made at Cuban ports managed by the Ministry of
Transport, totaled some 125, of which 28 arrived at
the Olimpia Medina dock, in the inner harbor of
Cienfuegos port.
