Pinar del Rio Coat of Arms bestowed
on Fernando González

The
Decorated Hero of the Republic of Cuba, Fernando
González Llort, was awarded the Pinar del Rio Coat
of Arms, the highest honor
conferred by
this province on
individuals who have excelled in
different areas.
The
ceremony took place during a visit of several days
by the prominent
anti-terrorist,
to the province where he
met with students and
workers from various
sectors, and toured
sites of historical,
economic and social
interest.
On
behalf of the people of Pinar del Río, Gladys
Martínez Verdecia, first secretary of the Party in
this area, and Ernesto Barreto Castillo, president
of the People’s Power Provincial Assembly, bestowed
the distinction on Fernando in recognition of his
courage and his loyalty to the Cuban Revolution,
demonstrated during his 15 long years of unjust
incarceration in the United States.
Born
in 1963, Fernando is one of the five Cubans who,
following a rigged trial, were condemned to long
prison sentences in the United States, when they
were attempting to prevent terrorist attacks by
counterrevolutionary groups
against Cuba.
The
Decorated Hero of the Republic of Cuba stated that
it was an honor to receive such a distinction,
awarded on behalf of a “heroic people, like that of
the whole of Cuba, hardworking and humble”.
"While
I know that the desire is that this honor also be
bestowed on Gerardo,
Ramón and
Antonio
when they return, I
especially accept it
on behalf of
the three of them, who
today are unable to receive
theirs."
Fernando
expressed his thanks for the warm
welcome and affection and
solidarity shown at each
place he visited.
He
also reiterated his commitment to continue carving
out the future of the Revolution and stated that he
would not give up in the effort to bring home his
three brothers in arms, who remain in prison.
"I am
certain that one day they will be here to receive
the
Coat of Arms.
That day
we will be united in joy for
a well-deserved
victory, won thanks to the efforts
of all."
