Bats donated by Gerardo Hernandez

Canadian Bill Ryan was once named a "messenger for humanity". And he demonstrated why, October 22 in the Los Pinos Sports Complex, where, on behalf of Decorated Hero of the Republic of Cuba, Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, he delivered four baseball bats which he had made himself, to two teams in the 11-12 age group.

The teams representing the municipalities of Arroyo Naranjo and 10 de Octubre lined up at the entrance of the facility and, after a karate demonstration by students of CD Los Pinos, Ryan - accompanied by his wife Norma - handed over the bats, which are inscribed with Los Cinco, and a CUBACAN logo designed by Gerardo himself.

An active member of the Committee to Free the Five, Ryan recalled that the idea of making the bats emerged five years ago, and that their quality has already been recognized by Sam Bat, a Canadian company which produces for the U.S. Major Leagues.

Ryan said that, before his trip to Cuba, Gerardo had asked him to make sure the bats were used, "Don’t hang them up as trophies on a wall, use them in your daily games and when they break, then yes, they can be kept as souvenirs."

As well as family members of the young baseball players and their coaches, the Olympic champions Mijaín López and Hector Milian, boxing world champion Sixto Soria and the provincial sports director Carlos Gonzalez attended the event.
