Travel agencies offer non-state accommodation

PINAR DEL RÍO.— Over the year an increasing number of travel agencies have incorporated non-state accommodations among their various lodging offers in the key tourist area of Viñales, Pinar del Río.

The measure is an alternative to meet the demand for accommodation during the high-season, which exceeds that offered by the three hotels in the valley, while also increasing offers available to customers, stated industry directors. Therefore, almost 200 contracts between Cubatur, Havanatur and Cubanacán have been established with ´casa particulares´ (guest houses) with this figure set to increase.

Dilkeson Toledo, Havanatur representative in the province, explained that the results of the measure have been positive to date. "In the past, our guides and chauffeurs would often have to stay the night in lodgings in the city of Pinar del Río, far (some 30 kilometers), from their groups; in addition, we had clients who were interested in specific activities in the area, such as hikers, who had to stay in Havana, instead of Viñales itself, because all the hotels there were full," recalled Dilkeson.

Yarelis Moreno, Cubatur representative, added that contracts with guest houses from the non-state sector, corresponds with the tourism industry’s aim of promoting Cuban life-style, culture and history. "In this sense, it is one more option to offer clients," she stated.

In all cases, having the necessary documentation, complying with tax regulations and providing comfortable rooms consistent with international standards, are essential prerequisites for the signing of contracts.

Enjoying the beauty of the valley, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the category of Cultural Landscape, the region of Viñales has more than 700 lodging options.

Despite guest houses having been made available since 1997, the possibility of collaborating with a travel agency means, for some owners, another source of access to guests, as well as greater promotion and recognition.
