Villa Clara continues to attract
international visitors
Inviting beach resorts on the Cuban coast, areas
abundant in biodiversity and rich culture and
history, attracted almost 172,000 tourists to Villa
Clara, from January through May 2014; a 12% increase
as compared to the same period last year.
Canada remains the principal tourist market for the
region, followed by France, Germany and Italy. Jorge
Luis Jiménez specialist for the Ministry of Tourism
(Mintur) in Villa Clara, emphasized that the
continued increase in international visitors to the
area reflects growth in investment. He added that
Villa Clara has around 7,000 hotel rooms – primarily
in Cayo Santa María -1,000 more than in 2013. The
area’s popularity is in large part due the variety
of activities it offers, including nautical
activities; dolphin centers located on the islands
north of Villa Clara; and city tours with visits to
historic and cultural areas, such as Santa Clara and
Remedios.
Jiménez highlighted that among Mintur’s main
projects is the restoration of one of the foremost
historic neighborhoods founded by the Spanish which
lies in the current province of Villa Clara, and
which will celebrate its 500th anniversary in 2015.
Building renovations are also planned to create a
number of accommodations and expand the Hotel
Mascotte restaurant, to expand the establishment’s
gastronomic services. (AIN)
