Wind farms in Gibara provide
15,000 megawatts
The wind farms located in the municipality of Gibara
have contributed 15,000 megawatts/hours to the
National Power Grid
José Pifferrer, director of the State Base Unit
(UBE) Wind Generation, highlighted that Gibara-1 and
Gibara-2 founded in 2008 and 2010, respectively, as
experimental wind farms, now provide 30% of the
municipality’s energy needs.
He added that the use of wind energy in the north of
the province, has contributed to more than 4,000
tons of petrol being saved.
The renewable energy zone also contributes to the
protection of the environment, given that it has
stopped emitting more than 11,000 tons of carbon
dioxide and other greenhouse gasses into the
atmosphere, which accelerate global warming, stated
the director.
Norelis Peña, coordinator of the provincial program
for the protection of the ozone, emphasized that
among wind energy’s principal benefits to the
environment is its contribution to reducing the size
of the hole in the ozone layer, a fulfillment of the
Kyoto Protocol, approved by the United Nations in
1997 and supported by Cuba.
In Cuba a program is underway to utilize energy
renewable sources; including biomasses, solar
radiation and water, which contribute to the
fulfillment of the Economic and Social Policy
Guidelines of the Revolution approved by the Sixth
Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba.
According to the World Wind Energy Association’s
webpage, the use of wind to produce electrical
energy is used globally in over 80 countries,
satisfying 1.5% of the world’s energy needs. (AIN)
