Deputy Executive Director
of the United Nations Environment
Program (UNEP), Ibrahim Thiaw, described his
visit to Cuba, in which he had the opportunity to
see the environmental and social development actions
undertaken in the country, as both a privilege and a
pleasure.
Speaking to Granma shortly after concluding
his visit to the island, Thiaw stated that it is
very important for the rest of the world to learn
from Cuba’s example in disaster mitigation.
“In the name of UNEP we are
happy to help,” said Thiaw, highlighting the
organization’s willingness to assist Cuba in every
way possible to share its experience in disaster
prevention at an international level.
He stated that the main objective of his visit was
to learn about the work being done in Cuba and
analyze, together with officials, possibilities for
future collaboration, considering Cuba’s importance
in the Caribbean and among developing nations.
Ibrahim Thiaw also emphasized Cuba’s efforts in
social development. “We have seen concrete examples
of sustainable consumption and production, which is
an important issue for UNEP;
we met farmers who produce food without the use of
agro-chemicals; we visited a biosphere reserve,
where we were able to appreciate the results of 40
years of continued work for its preservation,” he
stated.
